We can’t afford to go backwards on climate commitments so make sure to vote in the recall election and remind your friends and family to do so. We can make climate action a reality only if we have political strength and backing. Policy makers may incrementally clear the way for change at the infrastructure level, but executive leadership still has a major role to play to retire and phase out fossil fuel infrastructure and build a circular economy. On many levels, the State of California isn’t prepared to withstand expected, compounded, and worst-case climate scenarios. Drought, fire, and sea level rise are real. Amplify your voice and vote!

Climate Action Plan (CAP) Update
Sacramento County’s draft Climate Action Plan (CAP) was delayed to September. We’ll review the draft carefully and hope for the best but based on what we hear from County staff, it looks like Sacramento County will continue trying to avoid meaningful climate action. In a nutshell, the County’s intended CAP adoption process would:
- Avoid environmental review of the CAP, claiming the review was done ten years ago
- Avoid requirements to show evidence that the CAP will work
- Neutralize our ability to hold Sacramento County accountable under California greenhouse gas (GHG) requirements
- Present a baffling, self-contradictory public process that has no legal basis
- Present mitigation alternatives in a way that allows them to be ignored
The climate crisis is here now. Legal tricks won’t make it go away. For the CAP to address the crisis, Sacramento County needs to:
- Provide a full environmental analysis for the CAP
- Give the public a full range of alternatives before publishing its final draft of the CAP
- Take the County’s 2020 Climate Emergency Declaration seriously

Protest Demands CalEPA Clean Up Toxic Waste
On Monday, August 30 demonstrators gathered at the California EPA office to demand toxic waste cleanup at Santa Susana Field Lab and throughout the state. The action called attention to how CalEPA and Department of Toxic Substances Control are breaking their commitment to protect health and lives from corporate pollution and toxic waste. Demonstrators pointed out that the Santa Susana site impacts low-income and at-risk communities especially hard. Much work remains. For details, see this article in the Daily News.
