Land Acknowledgement
Courtesy of the Sacramento Native American Health Center Inc. (SNAHC):
The history of the Sacramento area, and the people, is rich in heritage, culture and tradition. This area was, and still is, the Tribal land of the Nisenan people. Sacramento was a gathering place for many local Tribes who have lived throughout the central valley and the foothills for generations and were the original stewards of this land.
We would like to acknowledge the Southern Maidu people to the North, the Valley and Plains Miwok/ Me-Wuk Peoples to the south of the American River, and the Patwin Wintun Peoples to the west of the Sacramento River. We would also like to honor the Wilton Rancheria, the only federally recognized tribe in Sacramento County.
We acknowledge that we are standing on the tribal lands of Sacramento’s Indigenous people.
Please visit snahc.org for more information about this Land Acknowledgement.
Climate Action in Sacramento
Sacramento is one of the most exciting and influential places to participate in the climate justice movement. Here are just a few reasons why:
Epicenter of Change
As the capital of California – the worlds 5th largest economy and a global leader in climate action – Sacramento is uniquely positioned to have an outsized impact on environmental policy, even beyond this region. What we do here can have repercussions across the state, country, and world.
Diverse and Engaged Community
The Sacramento metropolitan area – which includes the City of Sacramento, County of Sacramento, and surrounding cities, towns, and communities – is home to 2.6 million people and is reflective of the State of California‘s uniquely diverse population. Our vibrant communities and cultural diversity are at the core of what makes this area such an exceptional place to live, work, and advocate.
Publicly Owned Utility
Sacramento receives its electric power from SMUD. As a publicly owned utility, SMUD must reinvest its money into the community. This means they can charge lower rates and still maintain safe infrastructure, boost clean energy, and create equitable community programs.
[By contrast, corporate utilities (such as PG&E) are driven by profit and beholden to their shareholders. They’re incentivized to charge high rates, skimp on maintenance and upgrades, and avoid spending money to address the needs of their customers.]
A recognized leader in clean energy and community engagement, SMUD has committed to 100% clean energy 2030. As community members, we can hold them accountable by voting and attending monthly meetings to make sure they are on track.
The rest of the country is watching and learning, and it’s up to us to make sure our public utility delivers!
More than a City
Sacramento is the heart of a distinct metropolitan area that encompasses all the bustling amenities of modern city living, while also maintaining its roots in agriculture and nature. The city’s eclectic and feature-rich reputation has earned many nicknames, including:
Capital City – Sacramento is the capital of the most populous state in the USA (California).
River City – While the city itself is famously located at the nexus of the Sacramento River and American River, the greater Sacramento area is home to a wide array of rivers, lakes, and water bodies.
City of Trees – Sacramento’s signature abundance of trees has earned recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation and MIT’s Senseable City Lab (TreePedia).
Farm-to-Fork Capital – Sacramentans are proud of our regional farmlands, and local produce is infused into the city’s dining culture.
Sac, Sacto, Sactown – These abbreviations are both efficient monikers and terms of endearment.
