350 Sacramento FAQ

Get the FAQs about the reason we’re called “350,” what we do, why, and how by working together, we can all make a difference in the climate crisis.

What does "350" mean?

350 refers to the maximum amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Earth’s atmosphere we can sustainably endure. We need to reduce the atmospheric concentration of CO2 to no more than 350 ppm (parts per million), relative to other naturally occurring air molecules. Currently, CO2 is approximately 416 ppm.

What is the relationship to 350.org?

We are an independent nonprofit that aligns with the values of 350.org. Whereas 350.org is an international organization, we focus on climate justice issues that directly impact our local communities in the Sacramento region.

As of May 2024, we joined the 350 Network Council (350NC), which is a coalition of a dozen (+) 350 organizations around the country that provide support through communication, shared resources, and collaboration.

What does 350 Sacramento do?

We facilitate community action and advocate for policies that reduce pollution, protect our environment, and prioritize equitable, sustainable climate solutions. Our three primary areas of focus include (1) Advocacy and Policy, (2) Education, and (3) Community.

What is the driving force behind 350 Sacramento?

We believe that all people – and all living beings – have the right to enjoy fresh air, clean water, and a healthy planet, today and for generations to come.

Can one community make a difference in climate change?

Yes! As California’s state capital, we are uniquely positioned to impact systemic changes throughout the Sacramento region, with cascading effects across the state, country, and world.
