Sprawl Control Discussion

Background: 350 Sacramento and ECOS leadership have been discussing undertaking a campaign to run ballot initiatives to control sprawl boundary and urbanization expansions by regional cities and counties over the next few years. The purpose of this meeting is to gauge the level of interest in working on this large effort and begin the process of organizing the campaign if interest is adequate.

Context: in the United States, low density sprawling suburban communities are the cause of automobile dependency and thus the cause of the largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions. These kinds of development patterns have stealing development from existing neighborhoods that hunger for investment such as Elder Creek and Del Paso Heights for many decades.

Urban sprawl and the auto dependency that results has many other negative impacts on our communities as well such as making communities unsafe for children to move about freely and increasing the cost of living and government. Redirecting growth into these existing neighborhoods has synergy in many areas of the social, economic and environmental aspects of daily living.

Currently there is zoning for nearly 120,000 new single family homes already approved in the Sacramento region. That doesn’t count the much larger number of residences that can be built on empty lots on the existing neighborhoods of the region. Nonetheless, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Folsom, Roseville, Placer County, Eldorado County and Sacramento County are working on approving development for over 50,000 new single family homes in remote areas.
